The Best Kind of Saltwater Therapy: Recapping Our Long Beach Fishing Trip

TechPiscisea
Last Saturday, May 30th, we headed out into the coastal waters off Long Beach for our first official customer engagement event.

When we started this company, the goal wasn’t just to design high-tech hardware; it was to build a community of anglers who share our passion for the sport. Seeing our community on the deck putting our gear to work—and sharing real conversations between drops—is exactly why we do this.

Conditions on the water were solid, our drifts lined up well, and most importantly, every single angler on the boat put fish on the deck.

Here is a look back at how the day unfolded, the local residents that kept us busy, and the stories that made the trip special.

What Was Biting

Late May in Southern California is an interesting transition. The water is just starting to shake off the winter chill, the kelp forests are filling out, and the local reefs and breakwaters are teeming with life. We ran into a great mix of local fish. If you’re planning to head out there yourself this month, here is a breakdown of what’s biting around Long Beach.

California Scorpionfish (Sculpin)
You can’t talk about local bottom fishing without mentioning sculpin. They aren’t the prettiest fish in the ocean, and you have to be incredibly careful around those venomous dorsal spines, but pound-for-pound, they are aggressive ambush predators and legendary on the taco plate.

California Sheephead
These are the reef brawlers. With their distinct black-and-red coloration and a set of teeth that look terrifyingly human, sheephead are built to crush hard-shelled invertebrates like crabs and sea urchins. When they hit, they hit hard, and their first instinct is to dive straight back into a hole.

Vermilion Rockfish ("Red Snapper")
Whenever you see that bright flash of crimson coming up through the water, you know you’ve hit a vermilion reef. Found on the deeper rock piles and structures outside the harbor, these are a staple for local anglers looking for a fight and a fantastic meal.

Calico Bass (Kelp Bass)
The undisputed king of the coastal kelp and breakwater walls. Calicos are smart, resilient, and incredibly explosive. They use the rocks and thick canopy as cover, waiting to dart out and ambush passing baitfish.

The True Highlight

As much as we love analyzing drag curves and gear ratios, the real highlight of the trip happened between the bites. A fishing boat has a funny way of bringing out the best stories, and we had some incredible people on board last weekend.

We were incredibly honored to host a group of three best friends who have been fishing side-by-side for over 50 years. Watching them work the rail together, trading jabs and landing fish with the effortless rhythm of half a century of shared experience, was a masterclass for everyone on board.

We also had a fantastic family travel all the way down from San Francisco just to spend the day on the water with us. That kind of dedication to the angling community is something we don't take for granted.

But the moment of the day belonged to a young kid who hooked and landed his very first ocean fish on this trip. Watching that excitement is a reminder of how the obsession with the ocean begins, and passing that passion to the next generation is what it's all about.

A Beautiful Reminder

Technology is a choice, but community is our purpose. This trip was a beautiful reminder that our brand isn’t just about raw parameters or high-tech engineering. It’s about creating the reliable tools that let you experience these exact moments on the water.

A massive thank you to everyone who stepped on board with us in California. You are the heartbeat of this brand, and you’re the reason we keep pushing the limits of what premium fishing hardware can achieve.

Until the next lines are dropped!
